Some things break, some things work

Yes, so today I have gotten the outboard engine to work!!!! Turns out that I had overlooked on essential part of the carburator during the cleaning process. That part was so clogged up, that it looked like it was supposed to be that way.  Once I cleaned that things, it suddenly started worked.  Scared the hell out of me, I had been messing with that thing for a day, I wasn’t ready for it to start working ;-).  This outboard engine is probably one of the simplest engines possible, it is a one cylinder, and it is a direct drive (that might not be the right term, but what I mean is: it has no gear, transmission, clutch or whatever else, when the engine runs the propellor turns, always in the same direction).  It has the gigantic power of 2 HP, yes, two horses!  But, with just me in the dinghy it goes pretty quick anyway.  The choke works a little weird, so far it always needs choke to run.  Might have to look into that a little more.  Off course I need to look at the impellor at some point, but right now it does pump out a little water (I mean, a tiny little bit, but then again, it is a tiny little motor).

So, that is the success part of the day.

The failure part of the day is: my computer is acting up, I am not 100% sure, but I think I got a virus (yes, I know, it is called Windows).  Under XP the system is always at least 50% busy, the notebooks own keyboard does not work (well, about 1/3 of the keystrokes come in, at random), but it does work (slowly) using the external keyboard.  But…. I did have Linux on my notebook as well, so that is what I am using right now.  It wasn’t configured ready to roll with the wi-fi, so that took me a while to configure correctly (read….. to take out all the unneccessary stuff I was putting in the configuration files).  I am probably going to stick with Linux now, I don’t think I brought any XP installation CDs (actually, pretty sure I threw all those away, though, might be worth looking around for).

We have been getting some showers today and it is breezy.  Think the forecast for tomorrow is still not great, so I might end up staying here for another day.

If it still needs choke to run, there may still be a restriction in fuel flow (check fuel filter or screens or whatever it has), or there is air leaking in somewhere; perhaps where the carb bolts onto the engine.

Hmm…… fuel filter, don’t even remember seeing one, but maybe I should run the tank empty (that is not that hard, it holds about a quart) and check the fuel line between the tank and the carburetor. There is probably something at the bottom of the fuel tank.
